| Who are we? |
|
We are the young people of Jerusalem, We’re the ones who wander around ben-yehuda street, live in Nahlaot and Rehavia, study in the Hebrew university or betzalel, those who see movies at the cinemateque, and sports games at malcha. We go out downtown, hike around the Judea Mountains or the dead-sea. We arethose who live between east and west, a forest and a desert, between past and present, holiness and earthliness. we live among many different peoples; secular, orthodox, Haredi, Arabs, and foreigners. In our day to day life we take part in the uniqueness of being a Jeusalemite. We don’t see Jerusalem as a symbol of holiness or of nationalism, we see Jerusalem as more than just a political bargaining chip. We are those for whom Jerusalem is home. We are upset by the state of the city, its social and economic deterioration, in the worsening of its reputation. we are pained by our friends leaving the place where we choose to stay. We are the ones who choose to do something about it. In May 2008 we started our activity as an independent group of young adults from Jerusalem, who decided to take action about the deterioration of the state of the city and overwhelming emigration of young people. The objective of this group was and still is securing the future of Jerusalem by encouraging all Jerusalem Residents to take part in the improvement of the city – through social activities and political activism. In November 2008 we ran for the city council elections in a coalition with the Yerushalmim party and won 17,000 votes which equal 2 seats on the city council. And then we went to work... Today we’ve got hundreds of supporters and a dedicated core of activists who work to promote the vision of the movement. Other than supporting the activities of our elected city council members, we work to promote affordable housing for young people and work to mediate issues concerning religion in the city. We organise popular cultural events in addition to conducting research for the improvement of public transportation in the city. We collaborate with the city council and the government, with the media, research centres and universities. We work on behalf of the cities young population, students and the general public. We are the ones who choose to stay in Jerusalem, to take responsibility for its future.
